About GeneratorWiki

GeneratorWiki is a working record of fuel-powered generators on sale at the store: portable open-frame units, quiet inverter sets for camping, dual fuel and tri-fuel machines that run on gasoline or propane, and standby generators for the house. Each page notes what a listing says about a machine, set beside its price on the day we read it.

What a title says, and no more

Fuel type, the kind of generator, running and starting watts, the noise rating and whether it has electric start are read straight off the listing title and keep the seller's wording. If a title says nothing, the cell stays empty; we do not guess from a photo or from the brand. Watts are the figures a seller prints, and a machine's running output and its short surge output are different numbers, so check which one a listing means before you compare two units.

Nobody here has started one

No one on this site has fuelled a generator, pulled a cord or measured a decibel. You will find no photographs of ours, no scores out of five and no remarks on how a unit sounds across a campsite or how long a tank lasts, because we would be making them up. Runtimes and noise levels are claims a listing makes, not ones we have checked. Where a generator may stand, how far from a window, how to connect it to a house and how to store fuel belong with the maker's manual and your local rules; running one indoors or in a garage is dangerous because of carbon monoxide.

A price and when it was read

The money amount beside each generator on GeneratorWiki is what the store listed when we looked, stamped with that date and hour. A figure that has aged too far to trust is dropped from the page rather than left standing, and the store listing itself is where you confirm today's price before buying.

Guides and Learn

Each guide ranks generators on what their listings state and on cost. The Learn section explains terms such as running watts, surge watts, inverter output and transfer switches from pages that makers and safety bodies publish, and the front page gives the count of generators we cover.
